CV Writing Tips
Cover Letter
Cover letters are an often overlooked aspect of your job search strategy. You need one that stands out to secure an interview. Cover letters are a contentious area and there's no universal agreement among employers as to their worth. But when you send off your application, you don't know whether the person who receives it will ignore your cover letter and go straight to your resume, or if they read your cover letter in order to decide whether to look at your resume. You maximize your chances of getting an interview by writing a solid cover letter. Demonstrate you understand the job requirements, you have matching skills and experience and you are genuinely interested and enthusiastic about this specific opportunity. There's no one formula for writing a great cover letter. It depends on what's expected in your field, the industry and the sector.
Your Resume
Your resume's primary job is to win you an invitation to an interview.
Listing your jobs in chronological order, summarising your duties is not enough. Consider what an employer really wants to know before they even pick up the phone to talk with you. They want to know what difference you have made to your previous employers. They want to know how your skills, qualifications and abilities have been applied. And they want to know how your efforts have added value to the organisations for which you have worked.
If your resume satisfies these needs, the interviewer does not need to spend valuable interview time discovering what you did, what you achieved and what difference your achievements made. The interview therefore starts at a much higher level. Interviewers can dispense with the basics because it has all been clearly explained to them. They can probe more deeply and you can engage them in a more advanced conversation.
